6.3.11 Demonstration

Finally, the most spectacular of all supporting materials is a live demonstration, and we will come back to this in Chap. 8. Any talk will benefit from you showing something in action. There’s nothing better for proving your point to your spectators. Of course, the more remarkable, the bigger the impact. However, a demonstration does not necessarily have to be a huge explosion with pyrotechnics and glitter. It could be a scale model of a design, a piece of equipment or a demo that represents a difficult concept for your audience to grasp with words and images alone.

The benefits of live demos are clear; they are captivating and add depth to your talk. Take care, however, to make sure that the demo works properly. Practise well in advance and try it at least once in your presentation room too, on the day if possible. Make sure you have everything you need. If your demo fails, it can break your confidence or lose your audience. But, if it works, the payoff is worth it!
